When we launched our association, we knocked on every institutional door to find funding. They all remained closed. We then understood that our project would be citizen-led, or it would not exist. Without the generosity of donors, SOS MEDITERRANEE would never have been able to take to the sea to carry out its rescue mission.

It was created in spring 2015 thanks to the mobilization of citizens determined to act in the face of the humanitarian catastrophe of shipwrecks in the central Mediterranean. SOS MEDITERRANEE aims to provide assistance, without any discrimination and with dignity, to any person in distress at sea, in compliance with international maritime law. SOS MEDITERRANEE is a humanitarian association independent of any political party and any religious affiliation. It is founded on respect for human beings and their dignity, regardless of nationality, origin, social, religious, political, or ethnic affiliation.
